Trees of Bristol

Back in 2016, the late, esteemed Bristol naturalist, Richard Bland published three lists of the 200 most notable trees in Bristol, gathered from 20 years of tramping around Bristol, identifying species and gathering measurements and histories. At the time the data was in a Word document, trees located using OS maps , and accompanied by an authoritative comment on the tree and its species.

These veteran, champion and remarkable trees became the first collections of trees to be mapped on our sister Website TreesOfBristol .

Since those beginnings , the tree register has developed in size to 70,000 trees, the majority coming from BCC records but records have also been provided by National Trust, University of Bristol, Woodland Trust as well as our own surveys of private parks and trees of interest. It has also increased in scope to include 1,300 species or cultivars, and nearly 6,000 locations and areas. The site now provides a virtual arboretum of Bristol, where you can use the website and app to identify the trees around you, or find the nearest example of a species.

This site is a community asset, allowing registered users to add missing trees, edit descriptions and measurements and attach photographs.

Like many websites, TreesOfBristol is being constantly accessed by web bots which use up resources. To avoid paying for these resources, we have had to limit access to maps to users who are login in, or who find and click the Visitor Button on the right side of the home page.

This Biodiversity Net Gain — BNG — is calculated in ‘habitat units’ using a government spreadsheet.
