I heard a rather beautiful track the other morning on Radio 3. It turned out to be Ombra mai fu from Handel’s opera Xerces, sung by the wonderful countertenor Andreas Scholl. It’s an ode to the cooling shade of a Plane tree.
Having a very busy day ahead, I wondered if there was much Tree-themed music . This lead to a lively session on our Tree Champions WhatsApp chat, supplemented by input from Claude AI , which actually made some good suggestions.
The result is a bit of a hodge-podge of tracks: some closely tree-related , others less so; some classics , others not so well known and a few quite political. All remind us that the value of trees is not only ecological but also cultural.
